Homeschooled families are invited to the Calvert Marine Museum on Wednesday, November 19 to jump into River to Bay: Reflections and Connections. Children age 5 to 12 will enjoy special hands-on workshops focusing on animals, habitats, and challenges facing the Chesapeake Bay from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Fee is museum admission (members have free admission) plus a $2 program fee per person. Onsite registration begins at 10:00 a.m. in the lobby.
Opening in early October, River to Bay: Reflections and Connections is the new 14 tank aquarium exhibit giving visitors an immersive experience in the amazing diversity of animal life found in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The exhibit highlights three unique bay habitats: the deep, open waters, the brackish coastal shallows, and freshwaters of the coastal plains. In each habitat, guests can explore how bay creatures are connected to their surroundings, to each other, and to humans. Participants can engage their senses and their minds to develop a better understanding of how animals survive and what can happen in an unbalanced ecosystem.
During Homeschool Day, participants will explore the new exhibit using a scavenger hunt; discover how predator/prey relationships work by role playing; make observations and comparisons of different habitats; and learn about animal adaptations. There are on-going activities throughout the morning, as well as scheduled activities. The full schedule is available on the museum website at http://www.calvertmarinemuseum.com/education/education-youth-homeschool.php.
