April 2018 Events 

Spring is in the air at the Calvert Marine Museum! Programs and activities are planned for all ages in April. Visit the website at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com for a complete listing.

Monday, April 2 – Plants and Pollinators

10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Explore the native plants on the museum grounds from the salt march to Children’s Maritime Garden. After finishing a plant scavenger hunt, receive a packet of pollinator-friendly native seeds! Check the Admissions Desk for special tour times (weather permitting). For ages 4 and up.

Friday, April 6 – First FREE Friday

5 p.m. – 8 p.m. The museum is open and free to the public with docents in every gallery. Join us for the unveiling of the “Dinosaurs of Maryland” exhibit on the Mezzanine level, on display through the end of the year. The Drum Point Lighthouse and the Museum Store are open. Live music is provided by the Annapolis Bluegrass Coalition starting at 6 p.m. in the Harms Gallery.

Monday, April 9 – Homeschool Day Rescheduled – Celebrate Art!

10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Calvert Marine Museum (CMM) is partnering with Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center (AMG) for Homeschool Day 2018 with the theme, Celebrate Art! Homeschooled students are welcome to participate from 10 a.m. – 12 noon at CMM and 1 – 3 p.m. at AMG. Ideal for children in 5th – 8th grade, but all ages can discover something new. Pick up an interactive BINGO card at CMM, complete 5 tasks at both sites to earn BINGO, and turn it in at AMG for the chance to win a prize. The program is FREE with admission at both locations. Tuesday, April 10 and Thursday, April 12 – Sea Squirts

10 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. O is for Otters! FREE drop-in program for children 18 months to 3 years and their caregivers. Space is limited.

Thursday, April 12 – At the Water’s Edge Lecture Series

7 p.m. in the Harms Gallery. Dr. Ralph Eshelman will present the last lecture in the series, “Boats, Roads, Trains and Planes: A Look Back in Calvert County.” Dr. Eshelman was the museum’s first director, serving from 1974 to 1990, and is a recognized authority on the history of Calvert County and its waterways. He is author of several books on historical topics and works as cultural resource management consultant. FREE.

Saturday, April 14 – Ottermania

10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Celebrate the museum’s favorite mammal! Dance "the Swim" with the otter mascots, get your face painted ($5 fee), make an otter-themed craft, touch otter fur, and learn “otterly” terrific facts about otters. Museum admission applies.

Wednesday, April 18 – Sea Squirts

10 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. O is for Otters! FREE drop-in program for children 18 months to 3 years and their caregivers. Space is limited.

Friday, April 20 – Museum Members Save 20%

10:15 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. Museum members enjoy a 20% discount in the Museum Store all day today and on the 20th of every month.

Saturday, April 21 – Bugeye Ball

7 p.m. Enjoy a Magical Night at the Museum with fine cuisine, live entertainment and casino-style gambling at the 2018 Bugeye Ball. Tickets are $175 each and proceeds support the restoration of the bulkhead that supports Drum Point Lighthouse. Raffle tickets are also available for the chance to win a week’s vacation at the historic Cove Point Lighthouse or an exquisite piece of jewelry from Dickinson Jewelers. Raffle tickets are $100 each and only 150 will be sold; winners need not be present to win. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit http://www.calvertmarinemuseum.com/234/Bugeye-Ball. The Museum will be closed to the public on April 21 in preparation for the Ball.

Sunday, April 22 – Earth Day

Celebrate Earth Day! Participate in highlight tours of the museum’s salt marsh and gardens at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Make a craft from recycled materials from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Museum admission applies.

Thursday, April 26 – Little Minnows

10 a.m. – 11 a.m. The theme is What Floats Your Boat? For children ages 3 to 5 years old and their caregivers. Fee is $5, CMM members are FREE.

Thursday, April 26 – Gills Club

5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. FREE program for girls ages 7 – 12 interested in learning more about sharks. Gills Club is a STEM-focused program from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Preregistration is required. Register at www.bit.ly//GillsClubRegistration.

Friday, April 27 – Al Petteway 

7 p.m. The Maritime Performance Series and Southern Maryland Traditional Music & Dance present Al Petteway in concert. Petteway, a Grammy and Indie Award-winning guitarist, has toured and recorded with many of the best-known artists in folk and Celtic music. His compositions are influenced by Celtic, Appalachian, Folk, and Blues styles. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and available at www.smtmd.org. Doors open at 6 p.m. with beer and wine for sale.

Saturday, April 28 – Build a Toy Boat

2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Make a toy boat in the Maritime History Hall with sessions starting on the half hour. $2 donation per boat requested with museum admission. For ages 5 and up.

Saturday, April 28 – Fossil Club Meeting and Lecture

1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. in the Third Floor Lounge. Following the meeting is a public lecture by Dr. Stephen Godfrey at 2:30 p.m. in the Harms Gallery.

The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $9.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors, military with valid I.D., AAA and AARP members, and $4.00 for children ages 5 - 12; children under 5 and museum members are always admitted free.
