National Dog Day at Solomons Island
Maryland - August 23, 2008

The Calvert Marine Museum in
Solomons, Maryland has been selected as the host site for the
2008 National Dog Day main event on Saturday, August 23, 2008.
This event, founded by the Animal Miracle Foundation, will
feature a host of activities for dog-lovers including dog shows,
vendors, entertainment, contests, demonstrations, children’s
activities, celebrities, and most importantly, pet adoptions
offered by numerous nonprofit rescue groups.
On the Calvert Marine Museum Pavilion stage, the evening will
feature the first leg of the 2008 “FURocious” Concert Tour,
created by Colleen Paige, founder of National Dog Day, to use
music as a tool to not only shed light on animal welfare issues
in the states and abroad, but to also raise much needed funds
for welfare holiday projects such as National Dog Day and
National Wildlife Day. This concert will feature the music of
multiple popular emerging bands such as “Stop Motion Poetry,”
the headlining band of the “2008 FURocious Concert,” who also
have concerns for animal welfare. Admission is free and open to
the public except for special V.I.P. seating, available for
purchase in advance through the Animal Miracle Foundation.
Please bring a blanket or chair for seating. Food and beverage
vendors will be available.
“The monthly educational programming theme for August is “the
dog days of summer,” and we are excited to culminate our month
of activities with National Dog Day,” says Sherrod Sturrock,
Deputy Director of the Calvert Marine Museum.
National Dog Day, officially
proclaimed as August 26 annually, serves to help galvanize the
public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued
each year, and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work
selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring
comfort. Dogs put their lives on the line every day - for their
law enforcement partner, for their blind companion, for a child
who is disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs
and drugs, and pulling victims of tragedy from wreckage, saving
their lives and often grieving the dead and dying they cannot
save.
National Dog Day's founder, dog trainer and animal advocate,
Colleen Paige, felt it was time to honor dogs more than we
currently do - to give them "a day" to show deep appreciation
for our long connection to each other - for their endearing
patience, unquestioning loyalty, for their work, their capacity
for love and their ability to impact our lives everyday in the
most miraculous ways. National Dog Day wishes to encourage dog
ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure, and embraces the
opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and ”abuse-free
life.”
National Dog Day is produced and overseen by the Animal Miracle
Foundation (AMF). AMF is a private charitable foundation whose
mission is to advocate for the protection of domestic and wild
animals from cruelty and neglect. During Hurricane Katrina, AMF
helped in the rescue efforts by providing kennels to over 1,000
animals to shelters receiving displaced pets, most notably to
the Mobile, Alabama, SPCA. They also provided hundreds of pounds
of "red ant" killer and flea control to protect the animals.
Additionally, AMF provided clothing, food and toiletry supplies
to several make-shift human shelters for evacuees, including the
Humane Society of Central Louisiana, where 20 families with pets
had evacuated.
National Dog Day will be many a dog’s birthday and for all of
them it will be a “K9- 4th of July!” Even citizens who are not
dog owners will be encouraged to donate $5 to their local
shelter on National Dog Day.
