Lecture: RMS Titanic—Hubris and Horror; Birth of the Modern Age
Wednesday, April 14, 2021
Join Curator of Maritime History, Mark Wilkins, for a one-hour lecture that will chronicle the loss of the RMS Titanic on April 14th-15, 1912, and explore the social, economic, and psychological impact of this chilling event. Titanic marked a turning point in how we viewed technology, the value of a human life, and irrefutably dispelled the notion of the ‘unsinkable ship.’ Despite this event occurring over one hundred years ago, the story has enduring appeal. Before Titanic we were never so sure of ourselves, our world, and our future; after the sinking, there was nothing but uncertainty. Discussion will also focus on various Maryland connections to the event and its interpretation.
